Cengage Learning Executive Director- Engineering in Raleigh, North Carolina


The Executive Director, Engineering will serve as the primary technical lead across all Skills development streams. This person is accountable for coordinating on-time and to spec design & delivery of all relevant Skills functionality as per the roadmap. The role reports directly to the VP Technology, Skils.


The successful candidate will have previous success with software development projects with multiple work streams and interdependencies, preferably involving Content Management Systems. This role will be part of a cross-functional team consisting of Operations, Training, Content Systems, & Engineering resources.

  • Coordinate software design, development & delivery schedules across the various work streams, needed to develop and implement, to ensure on time and on budget delivery

  • Run and enforce best practices around cross-functional collaboration and software development

  • Own Software Development Project Plan, Burndown Chart, and other Project Management artifacts

  • Identify and mitigate risks to on time and on budget delivery

  • Bring software development and engineering expertise to bear on the conceptualization and planning of digital products for the disciplines

  • Work with the Architecture team members to integrate the discipline’s product roadmaps with the overall technology roadmap

  • Manage the Software Development Managers in the Skills group, and balance them against the changing needs for the disciplines within the group

  • Communicate with and address needs and concerns of Cengage business partners and stakeholders across functional groups, within and outside of the Technology organization


Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a field related to this job or equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience

  • 8+ years of in owning and managing complex, software development applications for infrastructure solutions

  • Ability to evaluate legacy and new system architectures with an eye towards integration

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills

  • Proven ability to be flexible and able to adapt to a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment

  • Proven track record of delivering successful business results through team leadership and teamwork

  • Understanding of the structure of software systems and architectural interdependencies

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization

  • Strong, creative business problem solving skills

  • Understanding of emerging technical capabilities and how to use them to solve problems

  • The individual in this position is expected to be able to travel up to 30% of the time
